Carmen Dolen

Artist of the Black Hills member Carmen Dolen

As an artist in constant awe of nature, I appreciate and enjoy the physical act of transferring what I have seen or remember to a two dimensional surface.  I have always been fascinated with art and the creative process, and somehow, it has always been a part of my life.  Constant exploration with pastels, watercolors and acrylics to capture any subject, is always a challenge and always fun!

Carmen Dolen is an artist who has never been able to remember a time when she did not want to make art. Her surroundings have always been an inspiration. As a resident of Spearfish, SD and living next to the rich and vibrant Black Hills, she is constantly delighted by the subject matter they provide.

Carmen was raised in the mountains of Colorado and started her love for the arts at an early age. She made time to draw and paint as much as possible. After earning her B.S. degree in Art Education and English, she became an art teacher and an advocate for the arts.

Carmen taught art classes at Dickinson State University and English at Central Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs, Wyoming. She taught K-12 in the public school system and Art for Kids summer camps in Dickinson, North Dakota. She also provided art lessons for children and adults in her home studio while living in Casper, Wyoming.

Carmen has always been fascinated by the creative process and constant challenge of capturing a moment in time and the essence of nature. Working with pastels , watercolors, and acrylics, she continues to accept and pursue the challenge.

Carmen is a Signature member of the Artists of the Black Hills, and a member of the Black Hills Art Association, Casper Artists’ Guild, and Northern Plains Water Color Society.
